Douglas Trumbull
Master of Special Effects, and Film Director
"When I first heard of Ron Resch, I was determined to meet him, and thus saw “The Folding Paper and Stick Thing Film”, which utterly changed my perception of physical space. Who would come up with a title like that, but a man with incredible talent and a sense of self-effacing modesty? I asked him to come up with some very alien designs for huge doors, or orifices, in the character “V’GER” (Voyager spacecraft with missing letters) for Paramount’s feature film STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE. Wow! I got just what I wanted, and could not have possibly anticipated that off-center conical geometries could interface and seal so perfectly. We’ve been friends ever since.
Now, in 2009, I am seriously interested in the possibility of our inevitable contact with extraterrestrial civilizations, the germ of which began when I worked on 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY. As part of my learning curve, I am trying to understand theoretical physics, Quantum Theory, General Relativity, and much more. So here is Ron Resch, probing curved space, energy, forces, strains, and geometries that help me understand more about space and time, and the fundamentally geometric nature of all things.
When someone finally figures out Zero Point Vacuum Fluctuation Energy (or something like that), it will almost inevitably involve some algorithm that Ron thought up years ago. He is a man far ahead of his time, and only just now are world architects and engineers beginning to get the drift of Ron’s vast storehouse of forms, shapes, structures, and associated algorithms. Theoretical physicists can’t be far behind.
Even though the math within which Ron’s incredible brain orbits is way beyond my comprehension, we can be close friends and relate through his physical models and enthusiastic gestures. Our meetings are always fun and exhilarating, with lots of laughs to lighten the weighty content and implications."
